Introduction to IEC and IEC EMT Conduit

What is the IEC?

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a global, not-for-profit organization that develops and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic, and related technologies—collectively known as electrotechnology. Established in 1906, the IEC's mission is to promote international cooperation on all questions of electrotechnical standardization and related matters such as conformity assessment in the fields of electricity, electronics, and related technologies.

What Does the IEC Do?

The IEC prepares and publishes international standards for a wide range of technologies, including power generation, transmission and distribution, home appliances, office equipment, semiconductors, fiber optics, batteries, solar energy, nanotechnology, and marine energy. These standards ensure safety, efficiency, and interoperability of electrical, electronic, and information technologies.

In addition to standardization, the IEC manages global conformity assessment systems that certify whether equipment, systems, or components conform to its international standards.

Global Reach and Recognition

The IEC's standards are recognized and adopted by numerous countries worldwide, facilitating international trade and ensuring that products meet consistent safety and performance criteria. The organization collaborates closely with other international bodies, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to harmonize standards across different sectors.

The IEC comprises over 170 countries, including full members, associate members, and affiliates. These nations adopt and implement IEC standards to ensure safety, interoperability, and quality in electrical and electronic products.

Notable countries that utilize IEC standards include:

  • Europe: Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, and others.

  • Asia: China, Japan, South Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and others.

  • Africa: Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco, and others.

  • Americas: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and others.

  • Oceania: Australia, New Zealand.
